A new study shows that students around the world lost about a third of a year’s learning due to the COVID pandemic. 15 countries were examined, most of them in the western world.
During the first year of the pandemic, many countries closed down their schools in an attempt to slow the spreading of the virus. Learning from home led to many problems.
The report states that distance learning led to a wider gap between students from different social classes. In families where internet access was bad or not available, students fell behind most. Children in developing countries and low-income families were hit the hardest by the pandemic.
According to the study, pupils had trouble in math and reading. Many schools offered summer tutoring programs to help close the gap.
In addition, as schools started opening up again, many children had problems getting together with their classmates and resuming normal school life.
