Rishi Sunak has been chosen by Members of Parliament to become Britain’s next Prime Minister. At 42, he is the youngest head of government in over 200 years. Sunak is the first British Prime Minister who has Asian origins.
Sunak won the leadership battle of the Conservative Party after Liz Truss had resigned, being only in office for only 6 weeks . Two other contenders, Penny Mordaunt and former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, dropped out of the race. Rishi Sunak is the third Prime Minister in less than three months and the fifth since 2016 , when Britain decided to leave the European Union.
The former treasury secretary faces major economic problems in the U.K. – growing debt, high inflation and increasing energy bills because of the Ukraine crisis. In addition, high food costs and climbing mortgage rates leave many Britons with less money to spend than ever before.
Rishi Sunak has pledged to unite a divided party and lead it into the next general election, scheduled in 2025.
